Just a quick update for everyone from DC. I am here serving as a reviewer for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Institute (PCORI), and I wanted to reiterate the value of serving as a reviewer on a study section.
Not only is the service an important contribution to the research community, but it is a way to really understand the process and the audience to which you are writing your proposal. Also, if you practice some active listening, you can learn about research processes from myriad perspectives and give your own work new depth and understanding. Many agencies, foundations, and, of course, PCORI provide opportunities for participating in study sections–pick the one in which you are interested in learning more!
Of course, another benefit is getting the chance to meet some new people with similar professional interests. That being said, I’m off to mingle with my fellow reviewers . . . and do some listening.
